Where to Watch Plays and Performances in Vancouver

Vancouver Play Stage

Vancouver takes pride in its exceptional performing arts scene that entertains and inspires people from all over. If you’re in the mood to watch a great show, here are the seven best places where you can catch them.

  1. Vancouver Playhouse

Look out for interesting shows at the Vancouver Playhouse, a proscenium theatre managed by the Vancouver Civic Theatres Department. Here, you can catch a variety of events like classical concerts, indigenous dance performances, and international solo shows.

The theatre has only 668 seats, allowing performers to create a closer connection with the audience.

  2. Granville Island Stage

You can find the Granville Island Stage in the historic Granville Island peninsula. One of the top theatres in Vancouver, it has played host to numerous award-winning productions. The venue is one of the three theatres of the Arts Club Theatre Company, an organization that has staged everything from comedies to dramas.

  3. Annex

Annex may be one of the smaller theatres in Vancouver, but it continues to be a versatile performance and entertainment venue. Located right beside the historic Orpheum Theatre, this cabaret-style venue hosts a diverse set of productions all year round, including dance concerts, cabaret shows, and musical performances.

  4. Vanier Park

The largest and most popular park in Kitsilano in Vancouver, Vanier Park hosts some of the biggest concerts and shows in the area. One notable event is the popular Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, Western Canada’s most popular Shakespeare festival. It runs from early June to September and features stage adaptations like The Taming of the Shrew, All’s Well That Ends Well, and Coriolanus.

  5. Rio Theatre

Known as a prime venue for premier independent cinema and live entertainment, Rio Theatre is undoubtedly “an experience you can’t download.” Epic comedy shows, entertaining drag performances, and inspiring music concerts are just some of the live shows featured in this popular theatre.

  6. PuSh International Performing Arts Festival

The PuSh Festival features contemporary live performances that are innovative, ground-breaking, and interactive. Past performances include a King Arthur adaptation with Down Syndrome actors, a hipster rock opera, and a show that has two men simply breaking dishes. This signature Vancouver event runs for three weeks every January to February.

  7. Vancouver Fringe Festival

Open to everyone, the Vancouver Fringe Festival is an annual 11-day event that features more than 700 performances and draws in over 40,000 attendees. It showcases an interesting alternative theatre lineup, where you’ll get to see all kinds of theatrical performances. From eye-opening plays to hour-long solo shows, these performances are sure to be entertaining and thought-provoking.
